Why A Nice Break Room Is Important

I remember hearing another prominent pharmacy owner once tell me that “it doesn’t matter if I don’t have a break room, my staff can just sit outside on the bench and eat lunch”.  I was a bit taken aback when I heard this as I’ve always taken pride in offering great amenities to our teams so that they can positively reset and recharge during their breaks.

The more I thought about this off-the-cuff remark, the more it got me thinking about the type of environment we create for our teams, and the huge impacts it has on the culture of our organisations.  It’s been widely documented that team performance and culture are inherently linked and one aspect cannot truly excel without the other.  Yet why do so many owners make such remarks?  And when designing a business, why are our teams rarely considered?

The mindset of the entire organisation determines the culture – not just the leadership team and not just the staff.  This is the fundamental first pillar in everything we do.  Mindset will ultimately determine every single outcome in all areas of both your professional and personal life.  The language we use has profound effects which when used positively, can lead to awesome results, but when used negatively, can ruin not only your business, but your reputation as a leader.

So as a leader who might use this type of language, my question to you is… what value are you truly placing on your team?  And what culture are you trying to create to obtain the results you desire?  Is it one of performance, or one of degradation and neglect?

Your team are your number one asset in your business.  This isn’t a line to sound cliché.  They literally are your number 1 asset.  Or maybe you know them as your number 1 expense?  It’s up to you how you see your team, and how they see you.  Richard Branson puts it quite simply – “take care of your employees and they’ll take care of your business”.

If you’ve finished reading this post, and thinking that you just need to build a better break room for your team, maybe read it again.  This is about so much more than just having a fancy break room for your team.
